“U2″のギターリスト”The Edge”が曲を作った当初は、確かに、「血の日曜日事件」（1972年1月30日、北アイルランドのロンドンデリーで、デモ行進中の市民27名がイギリス陸軍落下傘連隊に銃撃された事件。）
に関する曲でした。
“Bono”は「もしも気に入らなければ、二度とベルファストでは演奏しない」と断ってから演奏したり、一度は、「この曲を二度と演奏しないと決めた」と語ったりと”U2″が、”Sunday Bloody Sunday”との付き合い方は相当揺れました。
それでも、なお”U2″がこの曲を演奏し続けるのには、理由があります。
1987年11月8日に”Denver”デンバーで行われたパファーマンスがその事を物語っています。

Sunday Bloody Sunday＜解釈＞
“U2″が”Sunday Bloody Sunday”を演奏し続ける意味。
「『血の日曜日事件』を風化させてはいけない」ではありません。
こうしている間にも、世界の各地で、紛争と殺戮が絶えないことへの怒りです。
レコード収録中の”Sunday Bloody Sunday”は、エレクトリック・バイオリンの効果もあり、アイリッシュな音も感じられました。
しかし、ライブで演奏されている今の音には、アイルランドへの郷愁みたいなものは微塵もありません。
北アイルランドの事件や、カトリックやプロテスタントとの対立を取り上げて、”How long must we sing this song?”と声高に叫んでいる訳ではありません。
“U2″は、現在もなお続いている世界各地で起きている紛争と殺戮に対して、”How long must we sing this song?”と、”No More”と訴えながら戦っているのです。
“Sunday Bloody Sunday”の演奏が、さらに対立を激化して、新たな犠牲者を生むことを懸念してか、ライブでの演奏を控えていた時期がありましたが、紛争が絶えない今日でも、この歌がその役割を終えることはないのでしょう。
